DNS Monitoring

DNS is a critical component of modern infrastructure. An unplanned change in DNS can be catastrophic and generally DNS records should not change often. It is a good idea to monitor DNS to ensure you are aware of changes.

Vigilant's DNS monitor sends notifications when:

  • A DNS record changes value

  • A DNS record is removed

Setting up DNS Monitoring

Setting up DNS monitoring can be done in three ways with Vigilant. You can add individual records to monitor, import them of a domain or import a configured site's records.

For individual records you go to the DNS tab and click on Add DNS Monitor in the top right. You can then enter a DNS record and resolve the value.

The import functionality can be accessed on the DNS tab through the Import Domain button on the top right. You can enter a domain name and Vigilant will scan all available DNS records. After they are scanned you can delete any unwanted records.

When configuring a site it is possible to import records under the DNS tab, this works the same way as the Import Domain function.

A note on proxies such as Cloudflare

If you are using a proxy such as Cloudflare the DNS monitoring will not work correctly. This is because the IP addresses of these services change often.
